9/16/08 Meet Dottie, the baby Turkish Van. What is a Turkish Van? A breed of white cat with auburn patches at the base of the ears and a matching auburn ring tail. They are big cats that keep growing for 3 to 5 years. They love playing in water and often learn to swim. They are intelligent and extremely loyal to their owners. Dottie came to us as a stray from Old Marple Veterinary Hospital back in July and was only brought into the adoption room this week. When I opened the cage door today her first instinct was to cower in the corner, but just give her a shoestring to play with and all fears vanish. Within five minutes we were best friends and she enjoyed being carried all around the shelter.

So many people prefer to adopt a kitten rather than a teenage or adult cat but are missing out on many of the benefits of an older cat. Well-cared for, cats often live into their teens and even twenties. Adult cats at the shelter can often give many years of companionship. Those kittens will only be kittens a short time.
