Question by Rautamiekka: Conflicting behaviour from cat during petting?
Our neighbor’s ~5yo male cat visits us sometimes and, after some petting, goes on his side. If we touch him during it, he attacks. He uses his teeth when attacking. I read that if cat goes on his purring, he’s asking for more, but instead this cat attacks.

I love that myth about the purring. Purring is simply a vocal behavior that is associated with contentment, which a cat can experience while being sweet OR malicious. My cat acts the same way, when she gets on her side she either wants to play (which involves teeth) or is signaling she wants to be left alone, either way being on his side makes his claws available to use. Just keep this in mind when you go visit next.
