Question by Kellee .: Feline Herpes help!!?
So, I work at a local humane sociey and I have taken home a kitten who we thought just had Conjunctivitis. He has slowly started sneezing, wheezing and coughing and is on medicine and I thought he probably has feline herpes but I wasn’t for sure how long that lasts.
Right now he takes Lysine once a day, he gets a Baytril injection twice a day, on metacam for pain and swelling and vetropolycin for his eye.
His eye seems to be doing better as well as his cough but I was just wondering if the herpes actually ever goes away?
He is about two months old and had a couple of littermates that were with him but they were euthanized due to sickness too.
Right now his eye looks a little better although still swollen, he is sneezing every now and then with rattled breathing, sometimes he has blood coming from his nose. He plays good and has good energy but I have to force feed him to eat.

my moms cat had herpes and lived quite well with it for years once we found out what he had.
L lysine is the key to this disease. The amino acid breaks down the cell wall of the virus and stops it from replicating. our old guy took 500mg twice a day during an outbreak and could get by with 500 twice a week when the disease was dormant. a humidifier going in the room he is kept in or next to a kennel box he is in will help the breathing alot. Vicks makes a pediatric liquid you put in the humidifier and that helps too. Feed your kitten wet food while he is sick and warm it in the microwave. It helps with hydration and warming increases its odor .. which is enticing to kittens. Make sure to wash your hands after touching him. Also do not wear the clothes you handle him in to the shelter. the virus is very hardy and will cling to your clothes, potentially being passed to other cats at the shelter.
Sadly there is no cure for herpes for felines or humans. once infected always infected.
Add: try the humidifier. sometimes the herpes lesions form in the sinus. when they break it causes bleeding. Moisture helps that alot with that. you can do short period steam therapy if you dont have a humidifier with a small veri kennel or cat cage, a large towel and pot of boiling water. Just put the cat in cage, set it on a table.. put the pot on a chair, and cover the whole thing with a large towel. the steam will humidify the air for the kitten. If it really becomes hard to feed. see about being taught to tube feed him for a short time, and make sure he is hydrated. A dehydrated kitten wont eat
