I am in Northern Virginia/towards West Virginia and we had a bad blizzard this winter (no power for six days). I filled a dog dish with bird food, set it on our deck railing and attracted a flock of starving gold finches. They stayed. It is now mid April and we started feeding them thistle seed ( their preferred food we found out). I counted 14 today between our two feeders! The “music” is our wind chimes. These birds are really fun to watch. We also got a bird bath and have seen five of them drinking at once. Our inside joke is SWARM SWARM SWARM! 😉 They are molting, the most yellow ones have completed the process, the grey ones are females. They don’t have young for a few months yet. Also, check out the thistle seed level in the feeder. That is how much they eat in 24 hours! Damn pigs. 😉 We love them.
