Question by BdK: How often should you take your cat to the vet?
I just adopted 5 year old male cat and was wondering how often you should take him to the vet. I don’t remember…
Thanks soo much, it has been YEARS since I have had a cat. I can’t imagine life without one. I thought it was once a year, but wasn’t sure…Thanks so much again!

At least once a year for a wellness check and any applicable vaccine boosters. If they are senior cats, or cats with known health issues, the vet will recommend how often s/he thinks the cat should be brought in, which is typically twice a year at least.
Many vaccines are now available in 2-3 year doses, so it isn’t always necessary to give boosters every single year. My own cats are now on 3 year rabies and distemper. They still go to the vet every year for check ups, but don’t get a booster every time.
Many people are also worried about over vaccinated as it is a valid concern. It’s been found that vaccines are lasting much longer than we originally thought, so re-vaccinating every year doesn’t provide extra coverage. People who choose to not vaccinate after a certain period of time (senior years) are not necessarily putting their cats at risk. And some vaccines just don’t have a very good tract record, so I can’t blame people for not getting them. You really have to weigh the pros and cons of the vaccine against the circumstances of the cat.
Just food for thought.
