Question by charlie: How long should feline diarrhea last after final dose of cold medication?
A couple of weeks ago my cat had a teeth cleaning so I had to give him medication. That lasted four days and towards the end he started having diarrhea. The vet and my sister who’s a vet to be in grad school told me its normal that he gets loose stool because of the medication. Then he caught a cold. A few days after that i took him to the vet and he was put on mild cold medication that lasted six days. So his diarrhea hasn’t had a chance to clear up. It was recommended that i give him a little yogurt to rebuild his good bacteria in his stomach.
How long should the medication be in his system after the last dose? Last dose was two days ago.
And when will the diarrhea pass?

Hi Charlie… antibiotics removes all the healthy intestinal bacteria, therefore since your cat has another round of antibiotics it could take up to a week or little bit longer before the diarrhoea subsides. Yogurt can help replenish the healthy bacteria, but it should be given in small/moderate amounts because of the high amount corn fructose syrup in most brands. Plain yogurt doesn’t have any sugar added so this would be the best to consider.
