Question by mara: How much would it cost to care for a cat with FIV?
There is a cat that I would really love to adopt, but they have FIV. I am not sure if I could afford paying a large sum of money for vet bills.
Has anyone had any experience caring for a kitty with FIV? How much did you spend on caring for the kitty?– including the cost of food and what not.

For most FIV positive cats, their expenses are not that much greater than a non positive cat. Alot of FIV+ cats live out their lives without having any complications. (The FIV shot will cause a cat to test positive even if the cat is not infected with the disease so it is hard to know if a cat is truly positive. There are only one or two labs in the world with the technology to tell the difference.) Making sure you feed a good quality expense tends to be the biggest expense on a day to day basis.
If or when FIV becomes active is when bills “can” start to accumulate. They can have something as managable as stomatitis (oral problems) or as complicated and costly as cancers or they could crash (problems so complicated so quickly that there is no option other than euthanasia.) It’s not a bad idea to start an emergency fund (this is a good practice for every pet owner) for unexpected expenses.
Congratulations on looking at an option most people won’t even consider. (And for the record cats cannot transmit FIV to people.)
