Question by cali_grl_04: Question about Feline FIV vaccination…please help!?
My cat received a Feline Leukemia/FIV vaccine exactly a month ago…my vet said these shots are a series of three and so my cat had to be scheduled in three weeks to get the second one…well i havent taken him back because i cant afford the next two shots…ill try to get him in a few weeks when ive saved up..is it ok or does that affect the vaccine or him in any way? does it matter that ive waited more than 3 weeks to do the second one? thanks for the help!
or maybe he was just tested a month ago and didn’t get the shot…hm it was $ 39.00 and the lady on the phone said the shot was $ 52 so does that mean he was ONLY tested and hasn’t had the first shot in the series yet?
my cat is an outdoor cat and was microchipped and i think the bill i got just has FIV/leukemia together so maybe he never did get the FIV just got checked for it first

It sounds a little odd to me. We have Leukemia vaccine and we also have FIV vaccine but not the 2 vaccines together. The vaccine costs about 35$ were I work and you need a series of 2 vaccines given 3 to 4 weeks apart. You should also have been informed that it is recommended cats vaccinated for FIV should be microchiped in case they end up in an animal shelter because some cats will test positive for FIV after the vaccine. That does not mean the cat has FIV its an affect of the vaccine on the test. If you are being strict about keeping your pet indoors until you can get him vaccinated he will probably be ok until you can get back in to get the shots.
EDIT: Even if your cat is an indoor only cat it still needs to be vaccinated. Escapes are always possible and it seems like every time it happens there is a stray cat readily available. Every time my cat gets outside there always seems to be a neighborhood cat close buy. Its not just my opinion that indoor only cats have less natural immunity than cats that live outdoors so its always a good idea to vaccinate your cat even if it lives indoor.
