See this TripWow and more at tripwow.tripadvisor.com Rice Paddies and Hill Tribes “With the nightmare journey from Kunming to the Vietnam border behind us, we looked ahead to some trekking in the peaceful and lush green hills around Sapa. The town is nestled in the middle of the Hoang Lien Mountains with the tallest peak of the range (and all of Vietnam for that matter) being Fansipan at 3143 m. We didn’t conquer it, but we did discover some beautiful scenery and learned a lot about the area’s hill tribes. The town of Sapa is very small. The thru road is crammed with pedestrians, motorbikes, trucks and buses constantly honking their horns, letting you know they are there. Modern buildings mix with French colonial houses, most converted to hotels, guesthouses, cafes, restaurants and tour agencies to extract money from the many tourists that visit. There is no shortage of motorbikes and scooters to rent and if you want ethnic bracelets, blankets, pants, shirts and other assorted goodies, you’ve come to the right place. You can’t walk five meters without being harassed by women and little girls – some as young as six or seven – dressed in their traditional tribal gear, hawking handmade accessories.
