Question by psu176: what feline vaccinations does my kitten need?
What all vaccinations do cats need? Do they vaccinate for the feline leukemia and aids? My kitten had never had any vaccinations. Recently, he got an eye infection. I took him to the vet at which time I asked to have him vaccinated. She said that she could only give him the rabies shot (because at the time we did not know what was exactly wrong with his eye she had to take a culture etc) Now, the culture has come back and we are sure what he has. He also will have a follow up visit in about a week at which time he will be ok to be vaccinated. What vaccinations should I get him and how much should I expect to pay? (I am ok with a ballpark figure) (he is around cats, the neighbor has a vast amount of cats which are not properly cared for at all. i try very hard to keep him from them but can not always do that)
He has his rabies. I want to know what other ones he will need. And he is not allowed outside. Once in awhile he will run out and try to play with the other cats.

Rabies – yes
FVRCP – yes (Feline Virus Rhinotracheitis, Calici, Panleukopenia = distemper)
Feline Leukemia – if kitty goes outside – yes
Feline Aids – NO
FIP – NOOOOOO!!!!
Anything else – no, no, no. Costs approx. $ 15-$ 18 per vaccine. For Feline Leukemia they also want to do a test to make sure he’s negative which is approx. $ 40. Add to that the vet visit and you know the total.
By the way – do not skip the Leukemia vaccine if you allow him outside. Leukemia is highly contagious and always fatal.
