Question by Zeeboe: What is some healthy grocery store cat food I can get for my 15-year old cat?
I want my Toby to live to be 21, and older if it can happen. He lives off kitten chow, and I know I need to change his diet. I am thinking of mixing in some senior food with his kitten chow, but I need to know of an affordable brand name cat food that can be bought at any grocery store, and I was wondering if anyone here could recommend one for me please.

Start reading your pet food labels.
Avoid corn, corn meal, corn gluten meal, wheat, brewers rice, soy and animal by-products. These are poor ingredients. Cats cannot digest corn or wheat, soy can inhibit the absorption of the taurine in cats, and animal by-products are very poor protein sources.
Your cat is a carnivore, so when you shop for foods, always look for whole, named meats and meat meals as the first ingredients. Turkey, turkey meal, chicken, chicken meal, etc.
As far as grocery-store foods go, if you shop either Stop and Shop or Shaws, look for the following brands:
Harmony Farms http://www.harmonypetproducts.com/
Newman’s Own http://www.newmansownorganics.com/pet/home/
Companion Naturals (NOT the regular Companion brand.)
The Companion Naturals are only available in cans, and then only found at Stop and Shop. They do contain mostly fish, so they shouldn’t be fed more than a few times a week. To reiterate: ONLY the “Naturals” variety. The regular Companion cans are really just awful for your pet.
Be aware that by limiting your shopping to grocery stores, your selection for healthy pet food is going to be extremely limited. Even big petstores like Petco and Petsmart are offering better diets now, so making an effort to get there might not be such a bad idea. Here’s a list of some better foods and the places they can be found:
Wellness (Petco) http://www.wellnesspetfood.com
Blue Buffalo (Petco or Petsmart) http://www.bluebuff.com
Solid Gold (PetCo) http://www.solidgoldhealth.com
By Nature (Petsmart) http://www.bynaturepetfoods.com/
Best of luck to you.
